Selangor SPCA condemns sale of dog meat

-

SIBU: Selangor Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ( SPCA) patron Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye described the sale of dog meat as a ‘ very despicable’ act that must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.

He was reacting to The Borneo Post’s article published yesterday on the arrest of an alleged dog meat vendor who was said to have been killing dogs to sell as cooked food for decades at his house.

The case is being investigated under Section 428 of the Penal Code for mischief by killing or maiming any animal, which provides for up to three years in prison, or a fine, or both.

“I think it is something very despicable and it is also totally unacceptable because as human beings, we should be showing our care for animals especially domesticated animals such as dogs.

“I am very concerned about this. No matter where it happens and as patron of SPCA, I can’t stand the sight of seeing these animals being slaughtered and their meat sold,” Lee said.

He suggested that the relevant authorities such as the Department of Veterinary Services conduct investigations and take stringent action against the wrong- doers.

He urged the public to alert the police and Department of Veterinary Services should they come to know of similar incidents.

“When there are buyers, there are sellers. I would even go further to say for those who buy this dog meat, I think the government should also introduce some laws to deal with them.

“In fact, we should not encourage anyone to buy dog or cat meat, or any meat of domesticated animals other than those for religious purposes,” he opined.
