Budget for construction of SMK Selangau approved – Tamin rep
SIBU: The federal government has approved the allocation for the construction of the proposed SMK Selangau, costing about RM85 million.
Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang said the new secondary school was to cater to pupils from some 20 primary schools in the area.
He hoped the project can be completed within five years.
“I was informed that it is in the design stage and that hopefully, the construction can start as soon as possible.
“If there is no land issue, it can proceed as soon as possible,” Gira told reporters after officiating at Selangau district-level Teachers’ Day 2017 celebrated at a leading hotel here on Friday night.
Gira said the other secondary school in Selangau area is SMK Ulu Balingian besides SMK Luar Bandar.
He recalled that the new secondary school was promised by the government in the last state election when Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi visited Selangau.
“I had requested a few infrastructure and buildings for Selangau. The first thing I asked for was an additional secondary school to cater to primary schools there.
“The budget was recently approved for the construction of a new secondary school we named SMK Selangau, estimated to cost RM85 million,” Gira added.
In this speech earlier, he dwelled at length on the development taking place in his constituency and in the state.
He also mentioned Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg’s emphasis on the digital economy to bring the state to a higher level of growth.
A total of 175 recipients received their awards, of which, 80 were recognised for achievements in co-curricular activities and sports while 95 for academics.
At the function, Gira announced a Minor Rural Project (MRP) allocation of RM30,000 to Selangau District Headmasters’ Association.
