MMMC’s outstanding reputation in M’sia

-

THIS home-grown institution is a branch campus of renowned Manipal University, India, the latter by itself being an icon of quality education and healthcare in India over the last sixty- four years.

MMMC has always placed on the quality, with a capital ‘ Q’, in its delivery of education.

This persistent and almost an obsessive mind- set in continual upgrading the quality of its services has led to MMMC earning its well- deserved reputation as a premier medical school.

Having established the MBBS and BDS courses on its wheel of success, MMMC has commenced the Foundation in Science ( FIS) programme in January 2012.

This programme was launched with the objective of delivering better prepared students into the medicine and dental studies.

With this in mind the 1- year programme was developed inhouse with the aim of streaming students into Melaka- Manipal’s own degrees.

What differentiates the FIS and gives it the proverbial ‘ oomph’ is a foray into subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology, Forensic Science and Oral Biology in addition to traditional subjects such as Biology and Chemistry.

When students get into their eventual MBBS and BDS studies, the learning curve doesn’t seem that steep.

MMMC provides a blended learning opportunity for the students right from the foundation level. POSMED – a compulsory assignment/ competition, is a brilliant learning and assessment tool, which is showcased through a poster featuring the students’ research on medical devices from the aspects of Biology, Physics, Mathematics and their Clinical Correlation.

Since its maiden debut in 2012, POSMED has been a high quality learning platform for knowledge and experience exchange between faculty and students.

Our chief executive, Prof. Dr Jaspal Singh Sahota, constantly provides appropriate amount of direction and feedback to ensure a high level of team performance in the FIS programme.

He listens openly, shares his wisdom and vision in betterment of learning for the students.

Based on the minutetominute guidance of the FIS Programme Head, Dr. Rashmirekha Sahoo, as well as the dedication from the highly motivated and selfless organizing committee, POSMED has undertaken positive transformation and major face- lifts.

From the incorporation of PowerPoint presentations to role- plays and step- by- step demo, POSMED has been consistent and continuous in playing its part as an allrounded learning opportunity provider.

The most recent POSMED with the 14th batch of FIS students is evidently one- ofakind, as it was the inaugural attempt for students to produce a prototype to complement their posters. Creativity was key as a budget was set for the prototype construction.

However, the tight budget did not limit the students’ imagination as they cleverly salvaged scrap materials such as plastic bottles, paper boxes, water hoses, clay, ropes, etc. to build their prototype from scratch. This new and innovative format has indeed elevated POSMED to a whole new level of intellectual experience. The atmosphere of POSMED is always a mixture of thrill and anxiety.

Apart from ensuring a flawless presentation of their poster content and role- play via the PowerPoint or prototype, students also have to engage in an intense battle of the wits during the Q& A session.

Knowing best that effort always trump luck and talents, the FIS faculty especially the Semester 1 lecturers are ever ready to mentor the students in their POSMED endeavour and share their wealth of knowledge so as to better equip the students to meet head- to- head with the panel of jury.

On top of that, students put forth their best and are eager to emerge victorious as winners of the Best Poster and Best Prototype categories will be handsomely rewarded with prizes.

As a commemoration of the FIS Batch 14 students’ effort and creativity, as well as to offer the campus community a glimpse of POSMED, the Organising Committee took initiative to setup a POSMED 14 Posters & Prototype Exhibition at the campus. This exhibition provides snippets and highlights of POSMED 14 to those who were unable to witness the excitement on the actual event day.

POSMED proved to be so much fun as it instilled soft skills, the perseverance to succeed and was a good platform to prepare young minds for holistic excellence through experiential learning.

For those who wish that their children have a head- start as a medical professional would do very well to put them on the right path by signing up for the FIS at Melaka- Manipal.

A visit to MMMC is highly recommended, its staff ever willing to proudly show off their campus to anyone willing to take their time to drive to Melaka.

Applications can now be submitted via online at www. manipal. edu/ melaka for the FIS (July 2017 intake) and MBBS ( October 2017 intake).

Those unable to afford the time for the drive to Historical City of Melaka may call 06- 289 6662 or direct e- mail queries to info@manipal.edu.my
