-

MIRI: Wireless fidelity ( WiFi) can soon be enjoyed for free along the Wireless Walk ( WW) once the upgrading works in the area are fully completed.

In stating this, Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin said the government had approved an allocation of RM5 million to upgrade WW which is located along Jalan North Yu Seng here, which is a popular spot among locals and tourists.

“Tender for the project to upgrade WW has been issued and works will commence this year, at a cost of RM5 million.

“Apart from being upgraded to include more facilities, WW will also provide free WiFi and its area of coverage will be known as # wirelesswalk,” Lee told reporters here recently, adding that once the project is completed, WW will become another popular tourism product in Miri.

He also said there will be more than 60 stalls selling various kinds of souvenirs, food and beverages along the walkway and patrons will be entertained with live music by street buskers.

“We have also allocated a lot especially for food truck operators at WW so that members of the public and tourists can have varieties of food choices as well,” he disclosed.

According to Lee, the project to upgrade WW is one of the three upgrading projects that are being implemented as tourism products for Miri under the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP) at a total cost of RM15 million.

A total of RM5 million was approved for the development of Bakam Point which is expected to start early next year, as soon as the plan is approved by State Planning Authority (SPA).

Bakam Point will become another tourism product in Miri that will include a ‘tamu’ (market), seafood corner, a fishing jetty, a barbeque site, a picnic site and a footpath along Sungai Bakam all the way to the sea.

The remaining RM5 million will be used to build and improve Tusan Beach, which will include the construction of a 6.5km Tusan Beach Waterfront.

“Various amenities and facilities will be implemented on a six- acre piece of land. This will not only provide comfort to visitors in terms of safety, but it will also be a tourism product for Miri,” Lee added.

Apart from the three projects, Lee said the ministry is also monitoring two other projects in Marudi – one of them is the Baram Waterfront for which RM3 million (from a total of RM23 million) has been approved this year.

“At the moment, we are also upgrading Fort Hose ( Marudi) with an allocation of RM3 million and tender for it was opened this year to enable all the upgrading works to start,” said Lee.
