SIBU: Construction work on the new Methodist Victory Home at Mile 9 1/2 of Oya Road has finally started after 20 years of waiting.

Victory Home will be a rehabilitation centre for drug addicts.

Its management committee chairman, Ting Diu Kiong, said the construction of the RM5 million project would take about a year.

“We expect it to be ready for use by October next year.

“We planned this project 20 years ago, acquired the land in 1995 and got the approval of the State Planning Authority (SPA) in 1997,” he reporters after the earthbreaking ceremony for the project yesterday.

The building, when ready, can accommodate about 100 inmates compared to the 30 at the existing Victory Home in Sungai Bidut.

“However, there are about 38 people staying at the Victory Home in Sungai Bidut presently,” Ting said, adding that the place is a bit congested but they have to oblige requests to take in more inmates to help people to rebuild their lives.
