Next Big Chef showdown at CityOne Megamall this weekend
KUCHING: The quarterfinals, semi-finals and grand finale of Season Five of UCSI University’s Next Big Chef cooking competition will be held at CityOne Megamall here from July 21 to 23.
This popular annual event by the university is open to students from local secondary schools.
Not surprisingly, the event has received an overwhelming response from local secondary schools since it opened for registration this year. The university held the audition rounds in various schools earlier this year, with a total of 127 teams from 19 schools.
The total number of qualifying teams for the quarterfinals is 54. In the semi-finals, the number of teams will be reduced to 18, while the six highest scoring teams will meet in the grand finale.
Participants are required to prepare a meal set featuring Malaysian cuisine for the competition. Each group of participants will be guided by an experienced mentor from the university throughout the competition.
A pre- competition briefing as well as a meeting for the participants and their respective mentors were held to discuss menus and for the teams to receive training at the university.
UCSI University bursaries worth a total of RM70,000 and cash prizes worth RM2,250 in total are up for grabs for the top six finalists.
The main objective of this competition is to promote the unique skills and arts of the culinary profession, as well as highlight related job opportunities in the global industry. Apart from that, the university also hopes to instil an interest in cooking and food preparation within the younger generation.
