SARIKEI: The police narcotics crime investigation section here have arrested a total of 207 suspects for various offences under the Dangerous Drug Act 1952, Poison Act 1952, and Drug Dependent ( Treatment and Rehabilitation Act 1983) in the first six months of this year.

This represents an increase of 26.2 per cent over the figure in the corresponding period last year, which recorded 164 arrest, district police chief Supt Mat Jusoh Muhamad said yesterday.

Among those arrested were six persons believed to be (drug) suppliers, comprising one who was investigated under Section 39A(2) of Dangerous Drug Act 1952, and five under Section 39A(1) of the same Act, he said, adding that eight suspected suppliers were arrested in the corresponding period last year under Section 39A(1) of the Act.

Also, in the first half of this year, 41 suspects were charged under Section 12( 2) of Dangerous Drug Act 1952, and one under Section 30(3) of Poison Act 1952 for having in their possession scheduled drugs compared to 40 who were charged in the corresponding period last year.

Among those arrested in the first six months of this year and were tested positive for drugs via urine test, 150 people have been convicted under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952, and nine under Section 3(1) of Drug Dependent (treatment and rehabilitation) Act 1983, he added.

Mat Jusoh attributed the increase in the number of arrest to the aggressive action taken by his personnel to rid the district of the drug menace.
