Bomba probes premises without fire certificate
SIBU: Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) has opened up investigation papers (IP) on four cases of designated premises not having a fire certificate (FC).
According to Sibu Bomba chief Abdul Mutalib Rashid, these designated premises could have flouted the Fire Services Act 1988 (Act 341).
“We will send the investigation papers to the deputy public prosecutor for the next course of action,” he told reporters after officiating at Bomba’s RamahTamah Aidilfitri in Sungai Merah station yesterday.
Also at the function were Sibu Bomba station chief Abdul Mutalif Jaafar and assistant fire superintendent Chong Bui Chyan.
“A hotel with 21 rooms or more, for instance, is a designated premises that is required to have a FC. Likewise, it is also mandatory for a supermarket with a floor area of more than 2,000 square feet to have a FC,” he explained.
Errant proprietors can be fined up to RM5,000 for not having FC.
Abdul Mutalib also expressed concern that there are many commercial buildings carrying outrenovationswithoutconsulting Bomba.
“We advise the public whatever renovation they want to make, they are to submit the drawing plan to Bomba so that we can advise the appropriate type of fire fighting systems.”
Meanwhile, Chong noted of the prevailing misconception that renovation could be carried out once the building has been issued an occupational permit (OP).
He cautioned that the OP could be rendered void if renovations were to be carried out on a building.
Illegal extension to buildings, he added, could hinder the efforts of firemen in fighting blazes.
