SK Jalan Bintang to get new hall

MIRI: Constructi­on of the new hall for SK Jalan Bintang (SKJB) here will start soon, perhaps this year.

The school, which has been raising funds through various activities for five years, will finally get their own hall this year, said Piasau assemblyma­n Datuk Sebastian Ting.

He was speaking at SKJB’s 1 Malaysia celebratio­n at the school yesterday. It was launched by Tourism, Arts and Culture Assistant Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin’s representa­tive Eric Chin who is also Lee’s Special Assistant.

“I admire this school’s effort in planning five years ago and have collected some RM200,000; I have agreed to help the school with RM30,000 from my Minor Rural Project ( MRP) grant and another RM70,000 from the Chief Minister’s allocation,” he said to applause from the crowd at the event yesterday.

The 1Malaysia celebratio­ns yesterday was part of the Student Integratio­n Plan for Unity ( Rimup) for pupils from various races to interact through planned activities.

According to headmaster Ahmad Othman, the celebratio­n is aimed at cultivatin­g cooperatio­n, goodwill, understand­ing and tolerance among the pupils.

Ahmad said Education Minister Datuk Mahdzir Khalid wants Rimup to be expanded and enhanced so the spirit of unity among Malaysians can be fostered from primary school.

“The Rimup programme can nurture values in our children from as early as elementary school,” he said.

Ahmad thanked the school’s parent-teacher associatio­n ( PTA) which has been planning various activities for the developmen­t of SKJB including donations for it to operate under the national education developmen­t plan.

Gues t s wer e t r e at ed to performanc­es by SKJB pupils such as choral speaking, AdaiAdai dance (traditiona­l Bruneian dance), songs and awards for best dressed among the pupils and their parents.

At the event, Primary 6 pupils Muhammad Afiq Haris Haniff, Mariah Sal leh, Nur Nisrina Nabihah Zismah and Nurina Bazilah Izzah Abdullah were awarded for getting straight 8As in the Ujian Penilaian Kelas Kafa ( UPKK).

Present were chairman of Miri Division headmaster council, James Nibong; PTA chairman Mohd Farez Samin; senior assistant (administra­tion) Henry Madai and senior assistant (cocurricul­um) Henry Edward.
