Miri Pet Run postponed due to rabies concerns
MIRI: The Miri Pet Run, which was supposed to be held on Aug 20, is postponed to Oct 8 due to concerns over the rabies outbreak in the state.
It is organised by the Young Engineers Section ( YES) under the Institution of Engineers Malaysia ( IEM).
Organising chairperson Sheron Lim told a press conference on Thursday the organising committee came to the decision following public feedback, adding it was backed by Miri Mayor Adam Yii.
“The relevant authorities are now trying their best to keep the disease under control. Hopefully the disease will fade away soon,” said Lim.
She said updates or changes would also be posted on social media. Lim added that postponing the event to October would also coincide with World Animal Month, making the run even more meaningful.
“Profits from the Pet Run will be donated to Zero Strays Miri, a non-profit organisation which has been actively helping to reduce the stray ( animal) population in Miri via their Trap, Neuter and Release (TNR) programme,” she said.
“The response from participations has been really encouraging and exceeded our expectations, especially the dog category, which has already 30 teams so far, while the cat category has 10 teams.” Due to the postponement, the deadline for registration has been extended to Sept 4.
“The registration fee remains at RM60, which is inclusive of event T- shirt, waterproof bib, and a 2-in-1 finisher medal,” Lim said.
Those who have already registered but are unable to join the run on Oct 8 can do a ‘ virtual run’, or request for a refund.
