S4S to flag off Sarawak Day 2017 convoy of 40 vehicles at Taman Tunku

MIRI: The Sarawak for Sarawakians Movement ( S4S) is set to kick off this year’s Sarawak Day celebration here today with a convoy of 40 vehicles, involving over 100 people from across Sarawak.

According to S4S volunteer Erick Chin, the participants are scheduled to depart from Taman Tunku at 6.45am for Kuala Baram – making pit- stops at E-Mart Riam, Morsjaya, Ah Hong Supermarket, Tanjong Lobang, Marina Bay, Centre Point 1, Wisma Pelita Tunku, Yu Lan Plaza, Mega Hotel, Imperial Mall, Pelita Commercial Centre, Boulevard Shopping Mall, Lutong, Senadin, Tudan E-Mart and Permymall along the way.

“It is basically an aroundthecity tour, where we will be handing out Sarawak’s crowncrested flags to members of the public along the journey. This is an effort to promote awareness among the public of the importance of remembering Sarawak Day.

“Those wishing to join the convoy at any of the pit- stops are welcome to do so,” he said in a statement yesterday, adding that an estimated 5,000 flags would be given out here.

“In fact, the money used to produce the flags derives from the statewide public donation campaign run about a month ago. It took us a couple of weeks to collect about RM10,000.

“Apart from the flags – all 30,000 of them comprising the state flags and also the crown- crested ones – we also utilised the money to produce educational materials for the public.”

Chin also disclosed that S4S members had been giving out the flags to school-students here over the past couple of days.

In addition to the convoy, the celebration today also includes the ‘Sarawak Day Run’ hosted by SUPP Miri- Sibuti Parliamentary Liaison Committee.

Chin – the special assistant to Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin – said the flag- off would be at 7.22am.

“For the run, we will close the registration once the number of runners reaches 722. This is our unique, symbolic way of celebrating Sarawak Day,” he said.
