‘Be involved in arts and cultural activities to preserve identities’
MIRI: The Dayak community here, especially those from Generation Y, are urged to be actively involved in arts and cultural activities.
Samalaju assemblyman Majang Renggi said it will not only strengthen the cultural heritage, but also preserve unique identities.
“This can prevent the younger generation from getting involved in unhealthy activities,” Majang said when officiating at ‘Majlis Malam Kebudayaan dan Penyampaian Sijil Tamat Kelas Ngajat, Beranyam dan Betaboh’ here last Friday.
Majang, who represented Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing at the event said the younger generation should understand the importance of unity in a nation.
“The moral formation of a community not only depends on a few people but requires consolidation and cooperation among all levels of society.
“For the multi-racial community of Sarawak, culture and customs are powerful forces. These cultural elements unite a nation and its people with respect for each other,” he said.
He thus encouraged the Dayak community to enhance their knowledge of their history, origins, customs and culture.
At the event, Majang announced RM20,000 in minor rural project (MRP) grants for Dayak Association Miri (DAM).
He lauded DAM for organising the event which was a platform to foster the spirit of brotherhood, unity and harmony.
“DAM has organised a number of activities to enhance interest in ethnic culture such as ‘ngajat’ and ‘betaboh’ (traditional music).
“Encouraging student participation in various traditional arts and culture classes proves that members of the community appreciate Dayak cultural heritage,” he said.
Majang presented certificates to over 50 graduating students and tutors of the ‘beranyam’ (weaving), ‘ngajat’ and ‘betaboh’ classes organised by DAM from February to April this year.
Among the highlights of the event were launch of the association mission and vision, cultural performances, lucky draws and competitions for ‘Best Dress Lady’ and ‘Best Dress Man’ of the night.
According to DAM president Serawa Budol, the objective of Dayak Association Miri is to promote social, educational, economic, cultural and sports interests among members and Dayaks in general.
“DAM aims to become the agent of community transformation and serves as a platform and avenue for us to excel in achieving the nation’s Vision 2020 and beyond,” she said.
