SMK Agama Miri eyes tahfiz school status from MoE

-

MIRI: SMK Agama Miri is in the process of applying to the Ministry of Education ( MoE) for it to be recognised as a ‘ tahfiz’ ( Islamic religious) school.

According to school principal Ahmad Fauzi Yaakob, this is in line with the incorporation of the Tahfiz Model Ulul Albab (TMUA) into the Secondary Schools Integrated Curriculum ( KBSM) several years ago.

“Should we get the green light from the ministry, SMK Agama Miri would be the second tahfiz school in Sarawak after SMK Agama Sheikh Haji Othman Abdul Wahab (SHOAW) in Kuching,” he said during the school’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri gathering recently.

Ahmad Fauzi said his side is currently preparing the working papers on the proposal.

“We are very serious on this as we want the school to be selected by the ministry as among those that conduct tahfiz classes – possibly the centre for tahfiz studies in the northern part of Sarawak.”

According to him, the tahfiz programme at SMK Agama Miri is being run by the school’s parentteacher association ( PTA).

“It’s a two-year programme involving students from Form 1 and 2. We have received an encouraging response from the parents towards the programme,” he said, also assuring the parents that the tahfiz programme would not in any way affect the school’s regular curriculum.

On a separate matter, PTA chairwoman Marini Juraibi said 15 top Form 4 students from the school had been selected for a placement programme at SMK Agama Sheikh Haji Mohamad Said in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, running from this Sept 17 to 30.

Meanwhile Sibuti MP Ahmad Lai Bujang, who was the guest- ofhonour at the Aidilfitri gathering, announced an allocation of RM5,000 under his Minor Rural Project ( MRP) grant to SMK Agama Miri PTA.

Previously, the parliamentarian who is also the PTA’s patron, presented a government grant of RM100,000 to the school for upgrading works on its dining hall, assembly hall and its Surau Al-Falihin.

Ahmad Lai had also given RM50,000 to the school for upgrading works on its hostels, which was conducted on a ‘gotongroyong’ (work party) basis, as well as RM3,000 for the school’s ‘Back To School’ charity run.
