MIRI: Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin has reminded villagers living at Kampung Haji Wahed and its surrounding areas to make cleanliness a part of their culture.

He said that it is important to keep the area clean as it is one of the popular tourist destinations in Miri.

“Kampung Haji Wahed is one of the popular tourist attractions as it is located at the top of the Canada Hill, Sarawak’s and Malaysia’s birthplace of the petroleum industry and the place where the first oil well was drilled,” said Lee at the ‘Majlis Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri Kampung Haji Wahed and RC Zone Bukit Kanada’ at the village’s multi- purpose hall yesterday.

Lee said that among the famous attractions at Canada Hill include the Grand Old Lady and the Petroleum Museum.

“Tourists who visit Canada Hill will usually go to the museum and later on will have the urge to also visit the nearby village which is Kampung Haji Wahed.

“Therefore, I would like to encourage the local community with the help of the city council to look into the cleanliness of the area and to beautify their village so as to further boost the tourism industry in this city,” added Lee.

The event was organised by village security and development committees (JKKK) and Canada Hill Zone Resident Community ( RC). According to Canada Hill Zone RC chairman Cr Robert Ayu, the gathering served as a platform to strengthen unity and harmony among members of the surrounding community.

“Let us all gather together to foster friendship and nurture close cooperation among one another. Strong cooperation among the local community is important as it allows everyone to come together and join hands especially towards tackling issues that may arise here in the near future,” he added.
