Girls’ Brigade 1st Kuching Company celebrates 50th birthday

-

KUCHING: The very first Girls’ Brigade (GB) Company in Kuching — Girls’ Brigade 1st Kuching — turned 50 this year.

To celebrate its half- a- century long presence in the community, a short celebratory ceremony was held at St Thomas’ Cathedral on Saturday following the conclusion of the annual Girls’ Brigade Kuching Group Council ( KGC) combined enrolment day.

The combined enrolment day and subsequent celebration saw the participation of brigade girls and officers from all 10 companies within Kuching district.

KGC former president Evelyn Chew said, “We are so happy that God has sustained us always and allowed for us to grow so much.”

Inaugurated in 1967, the Girls’ Brigade 1st Kuching Company has been the place where young girls from the community are taught how to uphold their Christian faith and find enrichment in their lives through the virtues of selfcontrol, perseverance and a sense of responsibility.

With their motto of ‘ Seek, Serve and follow Christ’, the Girls’ Brigade organisation has grown to be a regular fixture in local communities state-wide with 46 companies established across Sarawak and 10 within the Kuching district alone.

Looking forward, Chew who is currently an advisor to GB-KGC alongside fellow advisor Lau Mee Ting, shared her hopes that the Girls’ Brigade in Kuching will aim towards greater community outreach.

“We should start moving towards a goal where we are more involved in the community instead of being just company- centred. I hope in the future we will have the opportunity to work with more local communities hand-in-hand. Together we should stand with the community.”

Also celebrating its 50th anniversary this year is the Girls’ Brigade Sarawak Regional Council whose celebratory events will be held in Sibu at the end of August.
