Month’s trial for one-way traffic flow in Sibu Jaya

SIBU: Sibu Rural District Council ( SRDC) will begin a month’s trial for a one-way traffic flow at commercial areas in Sibu Jaya here next month.

Its chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai said the move is to improve the traffic flow at identified areas here.

“We had done our study and from our observatio­n, some critical areas, particular­ly near Everwin and Kim Hock supermarke­ts, need a new traffic system to ease congestion in the area.

“We will make adjustment­s during the one-month trial and we welcome feedback and suggestion­s from the public on how to improve the traffic situation,” he told a press conference after chairing a full council meeting yesterday.

Sempurai advised road users to be alert to the new traffic flow in Sibu Jaya commercial area.

On another matter, Sempurai said the council has decided to implement a new policy that forbids Sibu Jaya residents to plant fruit trees on road verges in front of their houses.

He said fruit trees can cause eyesore to the landscape, creating problems such as fallen fruits blocking drains and tree roots damaging the sides of drains.

“As for banana trees, the leaves can collect water and become breeding ground for the Aedes mosquitoes.

“SRDC has been distributi­ng to residents notices telling them not to plant fruit trees on road verges,” he said.

During the full council meeting, Sempurai said the council would take more proactive measures to catch stray dogs in view of the rabies outbreak in Serian.

He urged dog or cat owners to ensure their pets are confined to the compounds of their houses.
