Aaliyah Yoong to lead local challenge in PreSEA Games meet

KUALA LUMPUR: Singapore SEA Games double gold medallist Aaliyah Yoong Hanifah will lead the country’s challenge at the Waterski and Wakeboard PreSEA Games Tournament to be held at Presint 6, Putrajaya, this weekend.

Mal aysi a nWater ski and Wakeboard Federation ( MWWF) in a statement issued yesterday s a id, 6 0 par t icipant s had confirmed their participat­ion in the tournament while a few Asean countries would also send their best athletes for the two- day meet.

“Indonesia will be spearheade­d by 2015 Singapore SEA Games champion Ade Hermana who won the men’s jump, Ians Febrianto who won two golds in men’s tricks and overall, as well as Rossi Amir who clinched the women’s jump,” the statement said.

MWWF said Singapore would be led by Sasha Christian, the 2015 SEA Games women slalom champion, as well as Mark Leong who won gold in men’s slalom in 2015.

Thailand is sending a strong wakeboard team headed by men’s wakeboard champion Padiwat Jaemjan (the Bomb), while the Phi lippines have conf irmed sending their national wakeboard champion and 2015 SEA Games bronze medallist Mark Griffin, the statement added. MWWF said all the SEA Games countries taking part in the tournament would have a chance to experience all the new facilities and course to be used in the SEA Games such as the 6.2 litre 410hp Nautique tow boats, new jump ramp from USA and new slalom course.

It added that the Malaysian SEA Games Organising Committee ( MASOC) who are the sponsors of this tournament, will use the meet to train the volunteers and also the national technical officials in order to ensure the smooth running of waterski and wakeboard events during the SEA Games, next month.

The entire national SEA Games waterski and wakeboard teams from three countries – Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia - will be competing in both events while the Philippine­s and Thailand will only take part in wakeboard events.

The preliminar­y round of the meet will be held on Saturday from 8am to 3.30pm before proceeding with the finals at the same time on Sunday. — Bernama
