Jacklyn shines at Smart Reader Kids’ patriotic public speaking contest

KUCHING: Jacklyn Tan emerged the best speaker among 15 young fi nalists of the ‘ Smart Reader Kids’ Patriotic Public Speaking Competitio­n 2017’ hosted by Smart Reader Worldwide Sdn Bhd at Plaza Merdeka Shopping Centre recently.

The six-year-old from the Smart Reader Kids Chong Hin Garden branch wowed the judges with her three-minute presentati­on on ‘Local Delicacies of Sarawak’, earning herself a hamper and a trophy.

Placing second was Abner Valiant, also six, from Smart Reader Kids Uni Garden- Kota Samarahan who delivered a speech on ‘ The Great Leader of Sarawak’, while Yong Ning Yi, aged five, from Smart Reader Kids Jalan Keretapi came third, with a presentati­on on ‘Sarawak Rafflesia’.

The consolatio­n prizes went to Casillias de Gray, six, from Smart Reader Kids Tabuan Jaya Baru 2; and also Bong Yang Xian, five, and Julius Ngui, six – both from Smart Reader Kids Jalan Song.

The judges were Norma John from Aim Smart Academics Sdn Bhd, Damien Mikeng from the Faculty of Language and Communicat­ions Studies of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak ( Unimas) and Debra Sim, a representa­tive of Plaza Merdeka Management Sdn Bhd.

According to Norma, the competitio­n is an initiative under Smart Reader Kids’ innovative ‘Intensive English Programme ( IEP), aimed at enhancing the children’s confidence level, as well as their fluency and articulati­on in English.

IEP focuses on the skills in reading, writing, vocabulary developmen­t, spelling, communicat­ions and publicspea­king. The subjects under the programme are Reading/ Phonics, Writing, Oral Communicat­ion, Spelling, Vocabulary Building, Grammar, Public Speaking, Story Reading/ Story Telling, Creative Play, Role Play/Dramas, Songs/ Rhymes, Poems and Games/Quizzes/ Spelling Challenges.

To date, there are more than 300 Smart Reader Kids centres in the country. Internatio­nally, there are 150 centres in Medan ( Indonesia), Australia, Thailand, the Philippine­s, Brunei, China, Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.
