KUCHING: Forty athletes and coaches from rugby, karate, pencak silat, swimming and athletics attended the mental skills workshop and biofeedback assessment at Stadium Miri from July 24-26.

The workshop was aimed at equipping the coaches and athletes with mental skills through hands- on approach which can be applicable into their training programmes to optimise peak performance.

It was conducted by Dr Garry Kuan Pei Ern ( USM) and Dr Chin Ngien Siong ( IPGKTAR).

In addition, Garry and Chin conducted a bio- feedback assessment with potential athletes at the Stadium Miri and Miri Swimming Pool.

The assessment comprised psycholophysiological assessment to evaluate the athletes through their brain waves, heart rate, breathing, muscle tension and body temperatures through the use of sensors on their body.

They were able to see their brain activity reaction to stress and controlling them on the screen.

Garry and Chin also utilised the Halo Neuroscience device for brain stimulation on the swimmers and athletes.

Sarawak Sports Corporation CEO cum Sarawak State Sports Council ( MSNS) director Dr Ong Kong Swee stressed the importance of exposing the coaches and athletes to mental skills training as sports are multistructured whereby athletes have to learn to focus on what they can control that would lead to better performance.

The workshop and biofeedback analysis assessment are part of the Key Result Area ( KRA) 6 of developing Sarawak as the sports powerhouse in Malaysia.

The workshop coordinator was MSNS Sports Development and Training Resources unit head Jubali Suhaili.
