SIBU: United People’s Party (UPP) fired its first salvo by announcing their two potential candidates for Lanang and Sibu parliamentary constituencies in the 14th general election (GE14).

Former Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) deputy chairman Dato Andrew Wong Kee Yew was named as the potential candidate for Sibu, while educationist Andrew Ting Kee Nguan was announced as the potential candidate for Lanang.

Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, who is UPP president, described the ‘two Andrews’ as hardworking and very committed to bringing development to Sibu.

“They are the most winnable candidates and it is my sincere hope that the people, especially the younger generation, will rally behind them and give them all the necessary support,” he said at the launch of Sibu Development Plan 1 for the next five years yesterday.

The entire UPP top guns were present at the ceremony including deputy president Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, senior vice-president Datuk Tiong Thai King, Datuk Dr Ranum Mina, vice-president Dr Johnical Rayong and secretarygeneral George Lo.

Soon Koh said the party would start from Sibu and gradually announce its potential candidates for other parliamentary constituencies across the state.

He also told Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) to refrain from arguing or raising any dispute with UPP on the potential candidates list, stressing that the final say would still lie with the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister.

“There is no point arguing over the choice of the candidates for the time being. On our part, we always choose the best candidates and work our best to ensure that BN will get the support from the people.”

Soon Koh also presented UPP as the party that provides all the opportunities for people, especially the young ones.

The people, he urged, should work together towards a better future for Sibu.

“Working together is the beginning and together, we can work towards better days ahead and also towards a better future for Sibu.”

Wong said Kee Yew had proved his political mettle through his involvement in the various educational sectors in the past such as Kolej Laila Taib (KLT), Sarawak Maritime Academy and University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS).

“During his time as SMC deputy chairman, he had worked tirelessly to upgrade and tar-seal hundreds of streets and roads in Sibu within a short span of time,” Soon Koh recalled, adding that Kee Nguan had also shown his commitment to working for the betterment of Sibu.
