MIRI: The Malaysian Bar, Advocates Association of Sarawak (AAS) and Sabah Law Society (SLS) have yet to reach a final decision on challenging the term extensions of Chief Justice Tan Sri Md Raus Sharif and Court of Appeal president Tan Sri Zulkefli Ahmad Makinudin.

Representatives from the three parties gathered for a meeting at a hotel here yesterday.

AAS president Ranbir Singh, when contacted, said no decision had been reached so far, but he added that the three would communicate with one another over the next several days to decide on the next course of action.

Malaysian Bar president George Varughese, who was here yesterday, strove to convince both AAS and SLS to challenge the extension of tenure for Raus and Zulkefli beyond the age limit of 66 years and six months.

In a recent statement, the Prime Minister’s Office said Raus would remain as Chief Justice for a period of three years effective Aug 4 after his appointment as an additional judge of the federal Court.

The same goes for Zulkefli, who would remain Court of Appeal president for a two-year term effective Sept 28.

It is learnt that Raus and Zulkefli both turned 66 on Feb 4 and March 28 this year, respectively.

SLS president Brendon Soh and 15 other committee members from the three parties were also present during the meeting, chaired by Ranbir.

The Malaysians Bar will have an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) this coming Thursday.
