Fajar International College provides pathway for aspiring safety and health officers

-

MIRI: It is good news for aspiring safety and health officers (SHOs) from this region that Fajar International College (FIC) provides a ready route for them to achieve their dreams, without the need to travel far away from families.

In the college’s press release, the OSHA Act 1994 has made employment of full-time safety and health officers who registered with the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) mandatory in many eligible industries, which in effect, made Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) a career with bright prospects for DOSH registered SHOs.

According to DOSH requirement, any Malaysian wishing to register with DOSH as SHO must meet the department’s regulation and requirement. And one of the options is to hold a DOSH recognised Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health from an institution approved by DOSH. After gaining three years working experience in the field, upon approval, DOSH will issue a safety passport known as the ‘Green Book’.

To date FIC’s Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health (DipOSH) is the only Diploma in OSH programme which has gained recognition from DOSH, besides the Malaysian Qualifications (MQA) accreditation, and also the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH)-UK accreditation in East Malaysia, which assures international acceptance of the diploma holders.

As only graduates of Occupational Safety & Health diploma that are recognised and endorsed by DOSH can apply to register as Safety Health Officers (SHOs), and it is imperative that present and prospective students take this mandatory requirement into consideration.

In terms of employment opportunities, DipOSH graduates are highly sought after by both the private and government sectors. In the private sector, they are highly demanded in the various industries like oil and gas, construction, manufacturing, plantations, hospitality and so on. In the government sectors, they can join any government agencies or regulatory bodies where the safety and health of workers are of their primary concern.

Moreover, many graduates get employed as consultants and lecturers in the safety and health field. Simply put, safety and health is a rapidly expanding field which provides its graduates demanding and growing employment opportunities, especially in the lucrative oil and gas industry.

For students wishing to continue their studies to the degree level, FIC has advanced standing arrangement with Middlesex University UK, where students can complete their final year London. Some students have also opted to pursue their degree with other local universities or university colleges.
