Pustaka Negeri to hold talk on ‘Gendang Melayu Sarawak’ on Aug 4
KUCHING: Pustaka Negeri Sarawak will host a ‘Sarawakiana Talk’ on ‘Sarawak Malay Drums: Artistic Heritage of the Sarawak Malays’ at the state library’s auditorium (Level 1) on Aug 4, from 9am to 11.30am.
The session is a part of programmes outlined for the Sarawakiana Carnival 2017.
According to the state library, this talk aims to give opportunity to the public, especially the younger generation, to know more about the art of ‘Gendang Melayu Sarawak’ and also to encourage Sarawakians to preserve and uplift the art.
The topics to be highlighted during the talk include the history and origin of ‘Gendang Melayu Sarawak’, the uniqueness of the terms used in this art, and the five performing categories comprising ‘Lagu Air’, ‘Lagu Endong Anak’, ‘Lagu Mencak’, ‘Nopeng’ and ‘Bermukun’.
The talk will be presented by Sapian Morni, an experienced ‘Gendang Melayu Sarawak’ player and activist. He often gets invited to be the speaker, facilitator and judge for any workshop related to ‘Gendang Melayu Sarawak’ in Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia.
“This is an opportunity for members of the public who are interested to know the art of ‘Gendang Melayu Sarawak’. Entrance to the session is free,” said Pustaka Negeri in a statement yesterday.
