Proposed – debate, public speaking club in every rural school to identify potential talents
MARUDI: Every rural school, both primary and secondary, should have its own debate/ public speaking team or club to encourage the children be involved in public speaking.
State administrative officer (SAO) for Mulu Sub–District, Rebetta Jangi believed that this would help in identifying potential talents among the rural school-children.
“The skills gained from school-level debate and public speaking competitions will help in grooming these children to become our grassroots leaders one day – those with eloquence and sharp-thinking capability who could deliver and highlight issues with conviction and confidence,” she said at the opening of Zone I Chief Minister’s Trophy 2017 Bahasa Malaysia debate competition at Baram Civic Centre here yesterday.
Rebbeta was representing Baram MP Anyi Ngau at the ceremony.
The Zone I competition hosted the debaters from SM Riam in Miri, SMK Long Lama, SMK Marudi and SMK Tinjar.
Adding on, Rebetta said hosting debate and public speaking events for the schoolchildren could also foster closer ties among them.
“The students are from different schools, different faiths, different beliefs and different background. Through these competitions, they get to gather and share ideas with one another,” she said.
The Zone I competition also hosted District Education assistant officer Jalong Wan, RTM Miri station manager Tabad Sakai and SMK Marudi principal Maria Jau.
In the end, SMK Long Lama won the debate on ‘Food Habits Contribute to Obesity Problem’ where they stood as the opponents and SM Riam as the proposers.
Jasnithna Janie Enturan of SMK Long Lama was also adjudged the ‘Best Speaker’ for that session.
Meanwhile for the debate on ‘Studying While Working Nurtures One’s Identity’, proposers SMK Marudi not only won over SMK Tinjar, but also clinched the ‘Best Speaker’ award through Norhelma Blute Veronica Roni.
