Silat fighters all fired up for state championsh­ip

KUCHING: About 200 exponents from Southern Zone, Western Zone, Eastern Zone and Northern Zone will fight for top honours in the Sarawak Silat Associatio­n ( PSS) Closed Silat Championsh­ip at the Sibu Indoor Stadium from Aug 4- 6.

PSS deputy president Fazzrudin Abdul R ah man said the championsh­ip organised by PSS is part of Sarawak’s preparatio­ns for next year’s Sukma XIX in Perak.

“This meet is aimed at selecting the best fighters to carry Sarawak’s challenge in Perak. All the respective zones except for Western Zone have organised their respective competitio­ns to select the exponents to represent their respective zones,” said the Tupong state assemblyma­n.

Fazzrudin added that Nangka state assemblyma­n Dr Annuar Rapiee, who is Assistant Minister of Education and Technology Research cum Assistant Minister of Housing and Public Health, will close the event on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Southern Zone have sent out a warning to other contenders by setting a target of winning 10 gold medals in the three- day championsh­ip.

To achieve this mission, Southern Zone will be fielding 40 exponents who were selected from the zonal competitio­n in Kuching in May.

“The team’s intensive training which commenced last month is headed by 2004 world champion and Singapore SEA Games gold medallist Abang Erdie Faurzerul Abang Pauzan,” the confident assistant team manager Azamri Kifle said.

The team flew to Sibu yesterday with team manager Mohd Zurisma Azmi.
