SEB urged to help Belaga folk via its CSR programme

-

KUCHING: Sarawak Enery Berhad (SEB) is urged to allocate more funds for its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme for the benefit of the people in Belaga.

Hulu Rajang MP Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong said it was high time that the local people were given due recognition for their sacrifices and their willingness to move out from their former longhouses and be resettled at Sg Asap to give way for the construction of the Bakun hydroelectric power (HEP) dam.

Since SEB is going to take over Bakun HEP Dam from the Ministry of Finance, it is high time that they allocate more funds for their CSR activities to recognise the sacrifices of the local communities who were willing to give way for the Bakun HEP Dam. Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, Hulu Rajang MP

“Since SEB is going to take over Bakun HEP Dam from the Ministry of Finance, it is high time that they allocate more funds for their CSR activities to recognise the sacrifices of the local communities who were willing to give way for the Bakun HEP Dam,” Ugak said when contacted yesterday.

He added that Sarawak Hidro, which had been managing Bakun HEP had allocated RM1 million annually for its CSR programme for the local community and NGOs.

“The funding for CSR is very important for the local communities as it will help to improve their livelihood and quality of life,” he said.

Among activities he reckoned crucial for the social wellbeing of the people of Belaga are sports, culture and educational activities.

Ugak was responding to The Borneo Post’s recent news article which quoted Sarawak Hidro chief executive officer and managing director Zulkifle Osman as saying that Bakun would be handed to the state government some time this month after the Sukuk holders of Bakun Hidro have sanctioned the sale of the mega entity to the state government at their recent extraordinary annual meeting (EGM).

On a separate issue, Ugak said he would implement several micro economic activities for the various communities in his constituency so as to improve their economic wellbeing.

“This is one of my focus for the people of Hulu Rajang which I will implement so that they will benefit from both Murum and Bakun HEP dams. And soon, the construction of Baleh HEP will be the next major economic activity in my constituency for the next eight years,” said the one-term MP.
