Borneo’s top international university to hold open day
KUCHING: Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus – the highest ranking international university in Borneo according to the Times Higher Education Asia- Pacific Rankings 2017 – will hold its open day on campus tomorrow (Aug 5) from 9am to 4pm.
It is ideal for students and their parents interested in careers of the future where technology is at the core of many industries (industry 4.0).
“This ranking adds on to our strong emphasis on teaching and learning with a focus on graduate and employability outcomes to ensure that our graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills as we move into industry 4.0,” said Swinburne Sarawak deputy vice- chancellor and CEO Professor Janet Gregory in a press release yesterday.
“Swinburne Sarawak has been successfully educating students for more than 17 years. Our graduates reported up to a 100 per cent employment rate for many business and engineering courses.”
Gregory said Swinburne recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the state government to strengthen research collaboration in areas strategically aligned with the digital economy agenda.
“Our computing and multimedia design courses are designed to give students an edge in an increasingly digital world,” she said.
The press release said Swinburne graduates are hired by the top 100 global brands across industries such as engineering, Internet, technology, financial services, telecommunications with companies such as Google, Apple, Citibank, Shell, Amazon and Accenture.
For the open day, academic staff from the schools of engineering, business, computing, design and science will provide information and guidance to parents and students about the range of courses offered at Swinburne Sarawak from foundation to postgraduate level.
Courses at Swinburne Sarawak are identical to the Melbourne home- campus and are accredited by many professional bodies such as the Board of Engineers

Malaysia, Australian Computing Society, Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), and Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
There will also be guided campus tours of learning facilities at the 16.5- acre city campus, which include cutting- edge computer, engineering and science labs and machinery; a vast library with extended hours for students to study; and recreational facilities including a fully equipped gym, squash courts, and an indoor multipurpose hall.
Other facilities include an information resource centre, a 400- room hostel for male and female students, and a range of social spaces including cafeterias, bookstore, and 24- hour student lounge.
The open day will also give insight on job prospects and career pathways through industry talks by senior academics and industry experts from the Malaysian Pepper Board, Ernst and Young, as well as Swinburne Melbourne from 2pm to 4pm.
Engineering associate dean Associate Professor Sim Kwan Yong will give a preview of the Master of Construction Management course at 2pm.
Students meeting the entry requirements will be issued a letter of offer to study at Swinburne Sarawak on the spot with application fees waived.
Staff will offer advice and guidance on scholarships and bursaries available as well as any other support students may require.
As Swinburne Sarawak is majority owned by Yayasan Sarawak, Sarawakian students may be eligible for the foundation’s study loans.
