Walk down memory lane for old boys
SIBU: It was a walk down memory lane for many former students who took part in the 50th anniversary of Sacred Heart Secondary School Relocation walk (From Mission Road To Oya Road) here yesterday.
The event attracted about 2,000 people including students, former students, teachers and parents. It was jointly organised by the school board of management, parent-teacher association (PTA) and Sacred Heart Old Students Association (Shosa).
The curtain raiser was the walkathon and jogathon, which were flagged off simultaneously at 6.45am.
Among those joining the walk were Sacred Heart School (SHS) board of management chairman Bishop Joseph Hii, event organising chairman Dr Hii Sui Cheng, former teacher Michael Chong, former student Awang Ali Bahar who left school in 1959 and other senior former students.
Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) deputy chairman Robert Lau, who is also former Sacred Heart Old Students Association (Shosa) president together with students and teachers also participated in the walkathon to spruce up the occasion.
The group took about 35 minutes to reach the school about 1.5 km from their starting point at Chambers Road here and were given a rousing welcome upon arrival.
For Dr Hii and his former schoolmates, it was indeed a walk down memory lane as they recollected the time when they carried chairs and tables during the relocation 50 years ago.
Apart from the walkathon, a series of exciting activities were happening at the school such as food fair, aerobic, handing over of the Mill Hill – De La Salle Resource Centre – Class of SHS 88, unveiling of the SHS Heritage Corner, signing of the 50th anniversary of Sacred Heart Secondary School Relocation plaque and Brother Albinus Cup Rugby Competition (Aug 5 – 6).
Meanwhile, school principal David Teo said in conjunction with the celebration, the school and PTA organised fund raising to help students to participate in the academic and non academic activities in the school, district, state national or international levels.
“We are all working very hard towards education of excellence, glory and distinction. As educators, teachers of Sacred Heart Secondary School give the school their very best possible in teaching young minds and touching their hearts to reach their potentials so that they can contribute to the betterment of our community especially in Sibu and beyond,” he said.
Teo also dwelled on the history and development of the school.
