Bro Albinus Cup to be a regular feature in rugby calendar

SIBU: All efforts will be made to ensure that the much-loved Bro Albinus Rugby Cup will continue to feature in the calendar of events for rugby competitio­n.

Sibu Division Rugby Union (SDRU) patron Dato Sri Bartholome­w Wong personally gave his assurance and said he would fully support the tournament.

“This year is the third edition of the competitio­n.

“Let us all give our support to ensure that it will continue to be carried out for many years to come,” he added.

Wong was speaking at the opening of the Sibu 10-aside Bro Albinus Rugby Challenge Cup held at SMK Sacred Heart sport field yesterday morning.

A total of 14 teams, including six teams from Kuching, five from Sibu, two from Mukah and one from Bintulu took part in the championsh­ip.

The teams are SDRU, Sibu Goldies, Borneo Wanderers, Saints Developmen­t Team A and B, Wolfpack RC, Kuching; Setiaraja Swiftlet Rugby Club, Mukah; Kenyalang Warrior, Kuching; Sibu Army Rugby Team, GB 13 Kuching, Warrior Old Boys Rugby Club, Kuching; Politeknik Mukah, Jepak Warior, Bintulu and Panthers Old Boys.

Wong also took special mention of the Ting’s brothers, Jeffery, Michael Anthony, who formed the backbone of SDRU.

“These three brothers had done a good job to ensure that rugby game will continue to remain relevant in Sibu as well as Sarawak,” he said.

He also congratula­ted SRDU for their recent victory in the President Cup, and the team will represent Sarawak for the Agong’s Cup to be held in Kuala Lumpur later this month.

With the Ting’s brothers at the helm, Wong expressed confidence that more rugby tournament­s would be organised as were in previous years which saw various tournament­s such as the Memorial Cup, the President Cup and the Bro Albinus Cup being organised.

Earlier, in his brief address, Bishop Joseph Hii reminded the players to showcase their spirit of sportsmans­hip during the two days tournament.

“This is a beautiful event and for the next two days, come out with your energy and full force to display your spirit of sportsmans­hip,” he added.
