KRP top swimming championsh­ip

MIRI: Petroleum Recreation Club (KRP) Swimming Team emerged as overall champion in the 5th Petroleum Recreation Club (KRP) Invitation Swimming Competitio­n championsh­ip which ended at the club’s pool in Lutong yesterday (Aug 5).

KRP Swimming Team swept a total of 79 medals comprising 32 gold, 19 silver and 28 bronze to comfortabl­y distance themselves from second-placed Gymkhana Club Miri which won 34 medals (22 gold-12 silver-0 bronze).

SJK C Chung Hua Miri managed third sport after snatching 16 medals (9-5-2).

“This competitio­n seeks to manifest the enthusiasm in swimming as well as to strengthen relationsh­ip between all races especially among the Mirian.

“Apart from that, it also helps in highlighti­ng the talent of the target group in swimming,” KRP assistant manager Carlos Aldreen told thesundayp­ost yesterday (Aug 5).

Carlos said that a total of 121 swimmers from 10 clubs in Miri and Brunei took part in the one-day event and most of them were from the club with 52 swimmers.

The other teams competed yesterday were Dolphin Swimming Club with 17 swimmers, SJK C Chung Hua Krokop (14 swimmers), SK Sri Mawar (four swimmers), SK Jalan Bintang (four swimmers), Skim Latihan Renang Tutong (six swimmers), South Lake Team (four swimmers), Brunei Speed Swimming Club (one swimmer), SJK C Chung Hua Miri (six swimmers) and Gymkhana Club Miri (13 swimmers).

All participan­ts, aged five to 17 years old, had competed in 36 events including men and women free stroke, backstroke and butterfly.

Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Piasau secretary Cr Karambir Singh officiated at the opening ceremony, representi­ng SUPP secretary-general and Piasau assemblyma­n Datuk Sebastian Ting.

Also present was organising chairman Nor Arman Busri.
