Rep: Bad roads will hinder tourism in the interior

-

BARAM: Bad and dangerous road conditions will continue to hinder efforts to in developing the tourism industry in Telang Usan and Baram in general.

Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau said even though the two areas are blessed with unique cultural and natural wonders, the local community are still unable to fully exploit them due to bad road conditions.

“The roads are bound to be muddy and slippery during rainy season, and dusty during the dry season. Those who are not familiar with the road conditions, including road system and navigation, are not advised to drive on their own,” said Dennis, pointing out that all of the roads in the constituency are still under the status of logging or timber tracks.

He said this during a certificate presentation ceremony to participants of the ‘4X4 Off Road Defensive Driving’ — a safety awareness training held at Tenyok in Long Bedian recently

Adding on, Dennis said this is where locals, who are familiar with the road system and navigation, could provide transportation services to ferry tourists and visitors from Miri into the interior.

The assemblyman also commended the 4X4 Owners Association for running the training session for its members and vehicle owners. “Safety of tourists and visitors are of the utmost importance. Incidents such as vehicles with tourists and visitors plunging into the ravine will leave a bad and negative impression.”
