Hope Place comes to aid of bedridden septuagena­rian

KUCHING: Goh Joo Sek, 70, has been bedridden for the past six years after a couple of falls injured her spine and left her paralysed.

She also suffers from asthma, low blood pleasure, and sometimes needs to visit the hospital for a blood transfusio­n.

Goh is being taken care of full time by her husband Then Ted Choi, 74, and the couple is also caring for a granddaugh­ter who suffers from a hole in her heart. Despite this, the granddaugh­ter is in secondary school and studying hard.

After being notified by Amy Li from Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP), Hope Place Kuching came to Goh’s aid with daily food items such as rice, cooking oil, salt, sugar, Milo, oats, noodles, biscuits and diapers.

According to Hope Place founder Kelvin Wan, Goh has four grown children who are all married. The eldest, aged 50, has cancer. The second son rarely visits after getting married, while the third son is in jail.

“The State Welfare Department is providing them with RM300 every month,” Wan added.

Hope Place is a non-government­al organisati­on (NGO) that visits the poor and less fortunate families to contribute essential food items like rice, cooking oil, sugar, salt, biscuits, and noodles.

Many of these families or individual­s barely earn enough to get through the month, and hence are grateful with the assistance provided bythese basic necessitie­s delivered to them.

For families with specials needs children, or with elderly or disable members, the NGO provides milk powder, oats and diapers as well.

Hope Place carries out its aid deliveries once every two months because of the more than 170 families on their recipients list.
