PKR calls for govt recognition of communal boundaries for 300 longhouses in Baram

-

MIRI: The Parti Keadilan Rakyat ( PKR) wants the communal boundaries encompassing 300 longhouses across Baram to be recognised by the government.

According to PKR Baram secretary Dennis Along, these boundaries were marked during the British colonial rule, while the land ownership and value system were based on what had been agreed upon by the forefathers of the local folk.

“PKR Baram is reaffirming its mission of rebuilding the Baram community according to the principles of truth, justice, accountability and good governance; as well as to help the community to understand and exercise their rights over their land, which is the key issue.

“In this regard, it is vital that the government recognises the communal boundaries in Baram, which were marked during the ( British) colonial era,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Dennis believed that such request was warranted, in that the Baram folk would ‘know more about their ground better than anyone else’.

“When all these land issues are solved, PKR is confident that Baram can progress further,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dennis said PKR Baram is fully supporting its chairman Roland Engan to be fielded as the candidate for Baram in the 14th general election (GE14).

“This is in line with the party’s mission to rebuild Baram, which includes addressing the issues affecting the natural environment of this area especially the pollutions deriving from timber operations and plantations.

“Moreover, PKR Baram always welcomes volunteers to support our mission to rebuild Baram,” he said.
