Wisma St Joseph charity golf tourney raises RM70,000 for church-building fund
MIRI: The second Wisma St Joseph Charity Golf tournament this year has raised a total of RM70,000 for the building fund of a local church.
According to Bishop Richard Ng of the Miri Diocese, the proceeds would supplement the fund meant for the RM25-million Wisma St Joseph Miri construction project.
“To date, we have managed to raise about 50 per cent of the required amount,” he said during the prize presentation ceremony at Miri Golf Club ( KGM) recently where he took the opportunity to express his gratitude to all participants, donors and members of the organising committee.
“The fund will be used for the project to replace the current St Joseph Cathedral ( building). The new premises ( Wisma St Joseph) will be bigger, with more parking spaces as well as multi-purpose halls for church activities.
“It is hoped that construction works would commence in the middle of 2018, considering that the whole ( project) approval process needs to be done in stages,” Ng said, adding that his side would still need more allocations for the project.
Meanwhile, the tournament attracted 130 golfers including those from Brunei, who took part in four categories – the Men’s Open Nett, Men’s Open Gross, Women’s Open Nett and Invited Guest Nett.
Kawat Ugi came out tops in the Men’s Open Nett, with Victor Mayor and Jonathan Chia placing respective second and third. The winner of the Men’s Open Gross category was Kunjin Sandhu, with Esaw Maikir and Philip Saging as respective fi rst and second runners-up.
Lina Libau excelled in Women’s Open Nett category, where Shirley Gregory and Amy Jane Toynbee were the respective runners-up.
In the Invited Guest Nett category, the tournament’s co- organising chairman Dr Charles Jolly was the winner, leaving KGM chairman Capt Ivan Pui at second place and Datuk James Lin, third. Placing fourth and fi fth in this category were Ngadan Lamoh and Agan Maran, respectively.
The other co- organising chairman Frank Siang and Father Guido Gockel – a Mill Hill priest from Holland who is now based here – were among the VIP guests at the Saturday night event.
