National takraw chief pledges support for sport in S’wak

MIRI: Organi ser s of the Internatio­nal Invitation­al Chief Minister of Sarawak Challenge Trophy must be determined to continue upgrading the tournament fol lowing the inaugural edition which ended last weekend.

Malaysian Sepak Takraw Associatio­n ( PSM) president Datuk Ahmad Ismail said it was necessary to ensure that it can attract the participat­ion of more teams from abroad.

He said this during the closing ceremony at a leading hotel here on Saturday.

PSM, he added, felt that Sarawak has many potential players from various races and pledged support for a planned state league.

“As the president of PSM, I am also determine to assist the Sarawak Sepak Takraw Associatio­n ( PSS) to seek for funds for the Sarawak Sepak Takraw League,” he said.

He commended PSS for taking on the challenge of hosting the internatio­nal tournament and sending a team to compete in an upcoming national league.

“Iwasalsoin­formedthat­Sarawak Sepak Takraw Associatio­n will be sending a team to participat­e in the Sepak Takraw League that we ( PSM) will organise for ten weeks in Kuala Lumpur soon,” said Ahmad Ismail.

Asked on the Malaysian squad for the 2017 SEA Games, he said that the national players are fully prepared to do well.

He admitted that being the host brings pressure for the players to play in front of home fans.

“We aim for gold in sepak takraw and hope that all Malaysians will pray for our success,” he pledged.

The Internatio­nal Invitation­al Chief Minister of Sarawak Chal lenge Trophy 2017 was participat­ed by teams from Japan, India, Thailand, Brunei Darussalam as well as local teams from Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia.
