KUCHING: The 81st birthday celebration of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud will be held here this year from Sept 8 to 10.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, who chairs the organising committee of the Head of State’s birthday celebration, said to kickstart the celebration, there will be a thanksgiving prayer at Masjid Jamek in Petra Jaya, on Sept 8.
“We will also be having Sarawak Kitchen, which is an opportunity for our traders to trade and they will start from Sept 8,” he told reporters after chairing the committee’s meeting at Wisma Bapa Malaysia, here yesterday.

Awang Tengah said 81 contingents will be participating in the parade, including a flypass that will be conducted by the Royal Malaysian Air Force as well as performance by school children.
“After the mammoth parade and rally, there will be a state awards and medals investiture ceremony which will be held at Dewan Lapau in the State Legislative Assembly ( DUN) complex. In the evening, there will be a state banquet at Dewan Santapan, also in the DUN complex.”
He also said there will be a ‘ Dirgahayu Tuan Yang Terutama’ concert at Celebration Square Kuching, which will see performances by many popular artistes and also a fireworks presentation.
On Sept 10, Awang Tengah said a tea party organised by the State Welfare Department will be held featuring a special presentation by the disabled.
Since the Head of State’s birthday celebration coincides with the official birthday celebration of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong this year, Awang Tengah said the ‘Raja Kita’ and ‘Dirgahayu Tuan Yang Terutama’ exhibitions will be held simultaneously.
Thus, he invites the public to join in the Head of State’s 81st birthday celebration especially during the thanksgiving prayer, mammoth parade and rally, as well as the ‘Dirgahayu Tuan Yang Terutama’ concert.
Among those present at the meeting were Assistant Minister of Law, State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, state Protocol Unit director Dato Khir Busrah and First Infantry Division commander Major General Datuk Stephen Mundaw.
