BINTULU: The 8th Malaysia International Palm Oil and Agriculture Equipment Technology Expo and Conference, and Borneo International Energy Expo 2017 was officially declared open yesterday.

Assistant Minister of Native Land Development Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn officiated at the opening ceremony, representing Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Modernisation of Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

Uggah said the programme held here was timely as it would complement the government’s efforts to develop its palm oil, agriculture technology and energy industries.

“It is also my ministry’s desire to advance modernisation, innovation and digitalisation of agriculture in Sarawak,” he said in his text of speech read by Sagah, adding he was delighted to note that the last edition of Palmtech Malaysia was very successful.

This year, more than 500 international visitors from countries such as the Philippines, China, Pakistan, United States of America, Korea, Japan, Indonesia and Nigeria came for the event.

Uggah added that more than RM50 million worth of contracts were expected to be signed at the event.

Among the programmes of the event are conference on business opportunities for green technology on palm oil and palm oil biomass in Sarawak, conference on driving Sarawak’s energy ahead, visit to Sarawak Oil Palms Bhd refinery, and workshop on palm oil application.

Big players in the industry such as 3M, Sirim, MBL Berhad, Southern Cable, Perkin Elmer, Tencate and Power Cables are showcasing their latest products and also holding their own specialised technical seminars during the event.

Uggah also hoped the participants would take the opportunity during the programme to play a significant part in Malaysia’s aspiration to become a regional palm oil and agricultural hub.

Meanwhile, director of Worldex Trade Media Group, Datuk Jerel Soo, said they were expecting more than 3,500 visitors to join them during the three- day programme.
