SDRU overpower Sibu Oldies to lift Br Albinus Cup

SIBU: Favourite Sibu Division Rugby Union (SDRU) downed Sibu Oldies 27-12 to win the 3rd Sibu 10-a- side Brother Albinus Rugby Challenge Cup at SMK Sacred Heart last weekend.

The team, powered by the veteran Fijian Iowane Sovatabua, was simply too strong for their opponents.

SDRU led 17- 0 at half-time after Zakie Sudin broke free from the left flank for a touch down in the 3rd min. followed by two more tries from Fijian Sekove in the 6th and 8th min.

In the second half, Iowane put the result beyond doubt when he pushed through a crowded field for a try to increase the lead to 22- 0.

The stubborn Sibu Oldies were rewarded with two touch downs to keep the score respectabl­e.

The champions and runnersup bagged RM3,000 and RM2,000 while Wol fpack RC pocketed RM1,000 in third place.

Kuching Warriors Old Boys Rugby Club was the Plate winner after beating Setiaraja Swiftley Rugby Club 26-17 while Bowl title went to Politeknik Mukah who overcame Borneo Wanderers 177.

Saints Developmen­t Team A was the Shield champion after bulldozing their Team B 31- 0.

A total of 14 teams took part in the two-day tournament organised by SDRU.

Other participat­ing teams were Kenyalang Warrior, Kuching, Sibu Army Rugby Team, GB 13 Kuching, Jepak Warrior, Bintulu and Panthers Old Boy.

Sarawak Rugby Union president Richard Song officiated at the closing ceremony.
