UniKL offers programme in Biosystem

-

UNIVERSITI Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Chemical and Bioengineering Technology (UniKL MICET) is a higher educational institution that specialises in chemical and bioengineering technology education.

One of the programmes offered for undergraduates is Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Hons.) in Biosystem. This programme is offered by the Section of Bioengineering Technology.

UniKL MICET located in Taboh Naning, Vendor City, Alor Gajah, Melaka is approximately 35km away from Melaka town. This branch campus of UniKLis set up with complete and up-to-date equipment in the field of Chemical Engineering Technology.

It has 43 laboratories, among them are: Chemical Analysis Lab, Basic Chemical Lab, Chemical Technology Lab, Preparation Lab, Bioprocess technology labs, biomolecular lab, Polymer Test and Assessment Lab, Latex Processing Lab, Food Analysis and Processing Lab, Computer Labs, Pilot Plant and Water Treatment Lab.

With the advancement of facilities available in the laboratories, the students will be experiencing up to date technologies which is similar to real working industry. Strengths of Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Hons.) in Biosystem.

This programme is a science based engineering programme that integrates science and engineering knowledge, from the molecular to the ecosystem.

The graduates of Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Hons.) in Biosystem will be able to solve problems involving living things and the natural environment by applying biological system knowledge, engineering analysis and design.

The advancement in quality of life and health made possible by biosystem engineering are potentially enormous.

The bedrock of advancement will be a radical increase in interdisciplinary working and mutual understanding, helping to promote new bioprocess technology and innovative manufacturing applications.

Involving biosystem engineering technologies earlier in the development cycle will enable companies and institutions to increase the speed and efficiency of their process development and product manufacture.

Among the specific applications of this programme are the area of bioprocessing (food and pharmaceutical), commodity processing, bioenergy engineering, environmental engineering and agriculture industries.

New technologies and techniques are emerging, made possible by enhanced computational power, new scientific discoveries and advances in fundamental like sciences.

Biosystem engineering technologists, with the ability to understand and bring all these things together, can help to accelerate development and use of new biotechnologies through better education of the public, governments and opinion formers.

The students will have the opportunity to choose either one of the specialisation clusters which are offered during the final year in the programme: industrial biotechnology, pharmaceutical products and primary commodity.

Graduates can use their expertise in many areas. They may be part of a team that pioneers a scientific breakthrough in biotechnology or work to preserve and protect the earth and its resources. The systems they design for the life support of plants and animals may include structures, machines, processes, management models, energy systems or controlled environments.

Specific applications include environmental quality and monitoring; bioreactor for bacterial/pharmaceutical applications; plant tissue culture and micro propagation; irrigation, drainage and environmental control for agricultural production; biological waste processing and management for minimal environmental impact; environmental regulatory activities; remediation of environmental damages; and production, storage and handling of agricultural products.

The biosystem education programme that UniKL MICET offers will indeed provide qualified graduates for various bioengineering areas. They will meet the job market demands and have potentials to become professionals, greatly contributing in those areas.

The Section of Bioengineering Technology in UniKL MICET also offers two more education programmes that are structured towards bioprocess engineering. The programmes are Bachelor of Chemical Engineering Technology (Hons.) in Bioprocess and Diploma in Chemical Engineering Technology in Bioprocess.
