IKM,NREB to hold seminar on environmental conservation
KUCHING: The Malaysia Institute of Chemistry ( IKM) Sarawak Branch, in collaboration with Natural Resources and Environment Board ( NREB), will organise a seminar on environmental conservation for sustainability at Imperial Hotel here from Oct 31 to Nov 1.
Themed ‘ Towards better managementofourenvironmentand resources for our future generation’, the seminar will be declared open by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, who is also Minister of Industrial and Entrepreneur Development and Second Minister of Urban Development and Natural Resources.
IKM Sarawak Branch chairman Dr Alvin Chai said the two- day seminar will bring together environmental experts, policy makers and key stakeholders to share their experiences and efforts in environmental conservation to promote sustainable development in Sarawak.
“The seminar covers topics on environmental policies, sustainable development and waste management in various industries. Through this platform, it is hoped that a better understanding can be fostered among stakeholders to bring about possible collaboration to conserve and manage Sarawak, the Land of the Hornbills,” he said.
Speakers from both government and private sector, institution of higher learning, researchers, industrial players and nongovernmental organisations ( NGOs) will deliver talks on various topics of conservation.
They include experts from WWF Malaysia, Natural Resources and Environment Board Sarawak, Heart of Borneo, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, Sarawak Energy Berhad, Swinburne University of Technology, Consultant Sunrich Biotech Sdn. Bhd., Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Institut Kimia Malaysia, Department of Agriculture Sarawak, University of Malaya, Trienekens ( Sarawak) Sdn. Bhd., Department of Chemistry Malaysia, Malaysian Palm Oil Board and Chemsain Konsultant Sdn. Bhd.
Two keynote papers will be presented during the seminar. The first, ‘ Environmental Policy of Sarawak: The Way Forward’, will be delivered by NREB controller Peter Sawal. The second keynote paper will be delivered by Elizabeth Nyomek also from NREB, with the title ‘ Environmental Audit: The Implementation Roadmap’.
Private and public agencies, industry players from plantations, agriculture, forestry, hydropower, fisheries as well as students are invited to attend to seminar.
