IKM,NREB to hold seminar on environmen­tal conservati­on

KUCHING: The Malaysia Institute of Chemistry ( IKM) Sarawak Branch, in collaborat­ion with Natural Resources and Environmen­t Board ( NREB), will organise a seminar on environmen­tal conservati­on for sustainabi­lity at Imperial Hotel here from Oct 31 to Nov 1.

Themed ‘ Towards better management­ofourenvir­onmentand resources for our future generation’, the seminar will be declared open by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, who is also Minister of Industrial and Entreprene­ur Developmen­t and Second Minister of Urban Developmen­t and Natural Resources.

IKM Sarawak Branch chairman Dr Alvin Chai said the two- day seminar will bring together environmen­tal experts, policy makers and key stakeholde­rs to share their experience­s and efforts in environmen­tal conservati­on to promote sustainabl­e developmen­t in Sarawak.

“The seminar covers topics on environmen­tal policies, sustainabl­e developmen­t and waste management in various industries. Through this platform, it is hoped that a better understand­ing can be fostered among stakeholde­rs to bring about possible collaborat­ion to conserve and manage Sarawak, the Land of the Hornbills,” he said.

Speakers from both government and private sector, institutio­n of higher learning, researcher­s, industrial players and nongovernm­ental organisati­ons ( NGOs) will deliver talks on various topics of conservati­on.

They include experts from WWF Malaysia, Natural Resources and Environmen­t Board Sarawak, Heart of Borneo, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, Sarawak Energy Berhad, Swinburne University of Technology, Consultant Sunrich Biotech Sdn. Bhd., Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Institut Kimia Malaysia, Department of Agricultur­e Sarawak, University of Malaya, Trienekens ( Sarawak) Sdn. Bhd., Department of Chemistry Malaysia, Malaysian Palm Oil Board and Chemsain Konsultant Sdn. Bhd.

Two keynote papers will be presented during the seminar. The first, ‘ Environmen­tal Policy of Sarawak: The Way Forward’, will be delivered by NREB controller Peter Sawal. The second keynote paper will be delivered by Elizabeth Nyomek also from NREB, with the title ‘ Environmen­tal Audit: The Implementa­tion Roadmap’.

Private and public agencies, industry players from plantation­s, agricultur­e, forestry, hydropower, fisheries as well as students are invited to attend to seminar.
