47 bodybuilde­rs vie for Mr Hammer honours

SIBU: Bodybuildi­ng has become a popular sport in this country as evident by the mushroomin­g of gyms at every nook and cranny, said KTS Trading Sdn Bhd senior executive Kelvin Lau.

He said this at the opening of the 2nd Mr Hammer Bodybuildi­ng cum Physique Championsh­ips on Saturday evening at Kingwood Hotel here.

“This is great because this reflects the growing trend of the younger generation being more conscious of their health – both physical and mental,” he added.

While confessing that he knew little about the sport Lau then quoted an American bodybuilde­r Kai Greene: “Bodybuildi­ng is an art, your body is the canvas, weights are your brush and nutrition is your paint. We all have the ability to turn a self portrait into a masterpiec­e.”

Meanwhile, two contestant­s from Kuching who are bound for the upcoming Mr Asia championsh­ips won top honours during the evening.

Awang Mohd Azizul Ghani and Melvern Abdul lah, both representi­ng Freaks Fitness Gym, emerged champions in the above 70kg and below 70kg categories respective­ly.

n the Mr Physique competitio­n, Allen Lee from Solid Gym and Mohd Shahrun Nizam Eden of Brunei’s Ironman Gym won the above 170cm and below 170cm categories respective­ly.

A total of 47 contestant­s from Sarawak, Sabah, Kuala Lumpur and Brunei took part in the tournament.
