Bikers and supporters treat Miri orphans to high tea

-

MIRI: Bikers contribute to society through welfare and community projects apart from indulging in their hobby by riding in convoys during special occasions and events.

Santai Riders Miri leader Abu Bakar Kalong said the riders contribute to society by helping the less fortunate and performing social work for the local community.

“We team up with various motorcycle and vehicle club members and do joint charity work apart from enjoying riding during the weekends or public holidays,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday after handing over contributions and treating orphans of Bonda Sari Miri for high tea. The children were accompanied by Bonda Sari Miri founder Masnah Jamin.

Also present during the function were Councillor Sardon Zainal, Councillor Arrifin Mohamad, Pekida Ranting MAB chairman Sarbeni Japar, Truckers Sarawak Region chairman Ustas Badrul Zaman Azahari, and members of various motorcycle and vehicle clubs.

According to Abu Bakar, most of the Santai Riders Miri members are from various motorcycle and vehicle clubs here in Miri and Sibuti and they regularly meet and organise group rides or convoys during the weekends.

He said, the riders would head to Tusan Beach, Niah, Bintulu, Limbang, Lawas and even Brunei and Sabah.

Abu Bakar said, apart from riding through villages and the surrounding natural environment in these respective areas, the members also spend time together to get fresh air, sightsee and even get to know the culture and customs of the local people.

He added that today’s function with the orphans was supported by various youth clubs, Miri City Council members, and Pekida Ranting MAB members.

He said the objective of the function was to interact with less fortunate children and understand their problems, and motivate and encourage those facing examinations apart from collecting donations for them.

Meanwhile, Masnah thanked those who brought in the orphans for high tea and gave them moral support as well as monetary contributions.

She said if more associations and clubs stepped up to help the orphans in Miri and in the state apart from assistance provided by the government, they can live a better life to face their future.

“Only God can repay their good deeds. We hope more NGOs (nongovernmental organisations) can help the government to ease the welfare of the orphans in the state,” she added.

Twenty orphans from Luak, Kampung Pasir, Lutong and Kuala Baram were treated to high tea by the bikers and Pekida APM.
