Malaysia aims to become marketing hub for EV by 2030
JOHOR BAHRU: Malaysia is expected to become the marketing hub for electric vehicles ( EV) by 2030, which is the country’s main target under the National Electric Mobility Blueprint ( EMB).
Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water Secretary- General, Datuk Seri Ir Dr Zaini Ujang said the plan, which is part of the ministry’s initiatives, focused on three main sectors, namely EV development for transport and private ownership, EV ecosystem and EV economy.
“EMB is part of the government’s efforts to introduce electric vehicles to replace diesel or petrol (vehicles) to reduce dependency on fossil fuel, and subsequently reducing greenhouse gas emission.
“It is also aimed at making Malaysia the marketing hub for electric vehicles, with a target of 100,000 electric cars, 125,000 charging stations, 2,000 buses and 100,000 motorcycles on the road by 2030, and indirectly could reduce carbon dioxide emission in the transportation sector,” he said during his speech at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia ( UTM), Skudai yesterday.
Up to April this year, there were 1,136 electric vehicles comprising cars, buses, motorcycles and bicycles being used in Malaysia, and to expand the EV usage in the country, a detailed planning was needed, he said.

and cheaper to EVs, whose usage are limited, however, with conducive policies as well as technology development, I am confident it could help EV usage in Malaysia,” he said.
Earlier, Zaini officiated the launch of “Sikal Elektrik Rakyat 1Malaysia” ( SER1M) at UTM, which also saw the contribution of 200 electric bicycles or Electric Pedal Assisted Bicycle ( EPAB) to the university.
SER1M is a government initiative to promote green technology through green practices to youths especially among university students.
Zaini added the EPAB electric bicycles were expected to reduce carbon emission by 12,500 tonnes annually for each participating university campus.
Besides UTM, the other universities selected for the SER1M programme involving 1,200 electric bicycles are Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Tenaga Nasional, Universiti Utara Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Sabah and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak. — Bernama
