Man gets eight years’ jail, caning for violent road rage

KUCHING: The Sessions Court here yesterday sentenced a man to eight years in prison and three strokes of the rotan for voluntaril­y causing hurt to another man five months ago.

Ronald Aloysius Liew, 27, pleaded guilty before Judge Dayang Ellin Narisa Abang Ahmad, who convicted him under Section 326 of the Penal Code.

According to the facts of the case tendered by DPP Haresh Prakash, the incident occurred on Feb 22 around 12.35pm at Jalan Lapangan Terbang here when the victim was riding a motorcycle and a car suddenly entered his lane.

An argument ensued and resulted in Liew striking the victim repeatedly with a baseball bat.

The victim’s father lodged a police report and Liew was arrested on Feb 27 at Jalan Pending.

Dayang Ellin ordered for Liew to immediatel­y serve the custodial sentence.

In an unrelated case, a man charged with raping an underage girl, who is now his wife, pleaded guilty to the charge in the Sessions Court here.

Sentencing was adjourned to today pending mitigation and for the facts of the case to be tendered by the prosecutor.

The accused committed the offence between January and February last year at a village in Matang near here.

The victim’s mother subsequent­ly lodged a police report.

The accused faces a charge under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, which provides for up to 20 years in prison and caning.

It is learnt that the accused and victim now live together and have two children.
