MIRI: A dog bite clinic has been suggested for Miri Hospital to provide medical services for such cases in the northern part of Sarawak.

The Local Government and Housing Ministry’s Public Health Section head Dr Cheong Yaw Liang made the suggestion during a public talk on rabies at Pustaka Miri on Saturday.

“To date, a total of four dog bite clinics have been set up at government hospitals and medical clinics in the state.

“All these clinics are established in the southern part of the state.”

The clinics, he added, are located at Sarawak General Hospital, Serian Hospital, Sentosa Health Clinic and Sri Aman Health Clinic.

Following a rabies outbreak in Serian and Kuching, Dr Cheong strongly felt that it was time for Miri to have a dog bite clinic set up at Miri Hospital.

He suggested that Miri mayor Adam Yii, who was also present during the talk, write a letter to the Ministry of Health on the matter.

On the latest situation regarding rabies, he told talk participants that the outbreak is now under control.

“Even so, there is a need for members of public to take precautionary measures by obtaining accurate information on how this deadly disease can infect humans.”

In view of that, he also suggested that Miri City Council ( MCC) distribute a simple public health message on rabies in fishtail form.

Although the outbreak has not hit the city, Dr Cheong said it was important for pet owners to keep their dogs and cats in their own house compounds.
