3,000 target set for World Heart Day turnout
Heart Run is a fundraising project and collaboration between the foundation and the Physiotherapy Unit of the Sarawak Heart Centre.
KUCHING: The Sarawak Heart Foundation ( SHF) is counting on a turnout of about 3,000 at its World Heart Day 2017 celebration on Sept 24 at the old State Legislative Assembly ( DUN) building.
SHF trustee and event organising chairperson Datuk Amar Jamilah Anu urged everyone to come and support this good cause for Sarawak.
The turnout is expected to be high due to the Heart Run, which is also held the same day.
“Heart Run is a fundraising project and collaboration between the foundation and the Physiotherapy Unit of Sarawak Heart Centre,” she said during a press conference yesterday at the Laila Stroke Rehabilitation Centre at Bormill Estate Commercial Centre.
The project aims to raise RM750,000 for the foundation’s Heart to Heart Programme that provides financial assistance for children suffering from critical heart disease to undergo medical treatment in cardiac hospitals in Kuala Lumpur, and for the purchase of the Cardiac Telemetry Monitoring System for the heart

centre to monitor patients with moderate to high risk of cardiac arrest during exercise sessions.
World Heart Day and World Physiotherapy Day are both celebrated in September each year.
World Heart Day is a global event that sees individuals, families, communities, organisations and governments around the world take part in activities to take charge of their heart health and that of others.
It has the power to unite people from all countries and backgrounds in the fight against the cardiovascular disease (CVD) and inspires and drives international action to encourage heart-healthy living across the world.
The theme for this year’s World Heart Day is ‘Share The Power’ and everyone is encouraged to share how they power their hearts and inspire millions of people around the world to be heart-healthy.
Meanwhile, World Physiotherapy Day is an opportunity for physiotherapists from all over the world to raise awareness about their role in keeping people well, mobile and independent.
On the day itself, Sarawak Heart Centre will be conducting free health screening for the public from 8am onwards. The screening covers body mass index, blood glucose, cholesterol as well as health counselling with doctors. Those who plan to get screened are advised to fast for at least six hours before the finger prick blood test.
Physiotherapists from both the Heart Centre and Sarawak General Hospital will conduct the warming up for participants with their version of aerobics. They will also provide services at a ‘Fitness Test’ area while line dance volunteers will engage the crowd in music and dance.
“The Foundation needs the support of everyone to ensure the success of this event,” said Jamilah, adding that every little bit helps, and that bigger donors will be entitled to tax exemptions.
Sarawak Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud will officiate at the event and take part in the 2km Heart Walk with his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Raghad Kurdi Taib.
The entry fee for the 2km Heart Walk is RM25, and includes a t-shirt and a small medal. Participants in this category can ‘upgrade’ to get a t- shirt and standard medal by paying a registration fee of RM50.
The 5km Fun Run has a RM50 registration fee that comes with a t-shirt and medal. The 12km Race is RM60, which includes a t-shirt and medal.
Prizes for the 12km Race ( Men Open and Women Open) are RM500 for the champion, RM300 for the first runner-up, RM200 for the second runner-up, and RM100 for the third runner-up. Runners placed fifth to 10th will get RM50 each.
