SIBU: It was a historic moment for SK Bandaran No. 2 yesterday when the school’s board of directors chairman Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau Lee Ming performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a new school hall costing about RM300,000.

Lau said the project, undertaken by Akron Contractor, is expected to be completed in three months’ time.

“By next year, pupils taking part in the morning assembly and other school activities do not need to fear both the rain and the sun,” he said at the ceremony.

According to him, the government had actually earmarked the school for redevelopment but the project was delayed due to financial constraints.

“As such, we do not have much choice but to proceed ourselves with the construction of the new hall,” he said, adding the pupils would enjoy a better study environment once the hall is completed.

As for the construction costs, Lau expressed his gratitude to Akron Contractor for accepting payment by instalments.

“We will pay to the contractor during the various stages of the construction and hopefully, members of the public can also chip in,” he said.

Emphasising the importance of education, Lau said: “How our country fares depends on how we educate our younger generation.

“Our children are our future leaders and it is thus vital that we provide them with good education so that they will grow up to become our assets.”

He said the government regards education as an important ministry and that explains why

each year, big amounts of money are allocated for the Education Ministry.

“Each time I go to the schools, be it primary or secondary schools, to attend events, I see these smiles on the children’s faces and this is something which all of us like to see.”

Lau had words of praise for school headmaster Thomas Tang, saying Tang worked hard and persevered in getting a proper hall for the school.

“The principal is very concerned about the study environment in the school and ever since he took over, he has been lobbying for a school hall.”

Earlier, in his brief remarks, Tang said when he first arrived at the school, he was disappointed as to why, after more than 60 years of existence, the school still did not have a proper hall.

“All this will be a thing of the past by next year and even though I will be officially retired by then, it is still my dream to see the school having its own hall.”

Tang said he was grateful to Lau for being an understanding leader whose contributions and commitment towards the academic sector were immeasurable.
