Cops to hold commercial crime awareness campaign next month

-

MIRI: The police will hold an awareness campaign on commercial crime next month.

Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Amer Awal made the pledge during his meeting with the Federation of Chinese Associations Sarawak here on Tuesday.

“I have received the proposals, which called for the police to educate the public, especially women in identifying fraud phone calls.

“There were a few solutions proposed by the federation to the related bodies, especially the police’s Commercial Crime Department and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission ( MCMC), that these two agencies can collaborate in combating commercial crime,” he said.

Amer said he would return here next month to hold a dialogue to further discuss the proposals.

He noted that dialogue is crucial so that the parties involved will have a clear picture on how to combat commercial crime effectively.

Amer said the federation also proposed heavier penalties for rapists and sex offenders.

“The Attorney- General’s (AG) office is in charge here. After we submit our investigation papers, the magistrate will hear the cases and then decide what types of penalties given. The court will decide,” he said.

Among those present were federation president Hii Teck Yun, deputy president Datuk David Goh, Miri Foochow Association chairman Datuk James Ling Suk Kiong, Miri police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah, and Miri deputy chief Supt Stanley Jonathan Ringgit.
