Experience culture and food at ‘Taste of Borneo 2017’

MIRI: Preparatio­n is in progress for the culture and food based carnival ‘ Taste of Borneo 2017’ at Boulevard Mall’s open car parking compound from Nov 24 to Dec 3.

Organised by Sarawak Chinese Associatio­n, the carnival is endorsed by Sarawak Informatio­n Centre.

Recently, a team of organising committee paid a courtesy visit on Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg.

They comprised carnival advisor Datuk Hii King Chiong, president of Sarawak Chinese Associatio­n Ting Pang Soon, organising chairman Harry Lee, Islamic Informatio­n Centre CEO Zabariah Matali, Dayak Associatio­n of Miri president Serawa Budol, Indian Associatio­n Miri president Councillor Karambir Singh, Sikh Associatio­n of Miri president Narmal Singh, Malay Associatio­n Miri president and deputy president of Federation of Orang Ulu Associatio­ns Sarawak, Malaysia (Forum) Ipoi Datan.

During the visit, Hii, on behalf of the organising committee, handed the chief minister an invitation to the carnival on Nov 25 as guest- of-honour.

The organising committee also invited Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and Consulate General of The People’s Republic of China in Kuching, Fu Jijun as special guests for the carnival’s special opening.

The Taste of Borneo Carnival 2017 is a special occasion in line with our nation’s realities. We hope this carnival will serve as a platform to promote a harmonious and peaceful society.

He noted that five ethnic associatio­ns of Malay Associatio­n of Miri, Dayak Associatio­n of Miri, Forum, Sikh Associatio­n Miri and Indian Associatio­n of Miri agreed to be partners for the event.

“The Taste of Borneo Carnival 2017 is a special occasion in line with our nation’s realities. We hope this carnival will serve as a platform to promote a harmonious and peaceful society.”

The organising committee also visited Fu Jijun on the same day.

Fu looked forward to the event which enabled the people including visitors from Brunei Darussalam to sample ethnic food and experience Sarawak culture.

A list of programmed has been planned for the 10- day festival with street dance, Borneo Mandarin Singing Contest, performanc­e from Silver City Music Records Enterprise, Borneo National Dance Contest, Cheongsam Costume Contest, street musical performanc­e and singing competitio­n, body building contest, Miss Model Recycle Clothing Contest and others.

In addition to that, the organiser held a ‘Best Decorated Stall’ competitio­n for stall holders that offers RM1,000 cash for the winner followed by RM500 for the second-placed and RM300 for the third-placed.

The organiser will distribute 1,000 mystery gifts to those who ‘ like’ the event on Facebook; the gifts to be given on a first come, first serve basis.
