Acute shortage of Chinese community leaders to serve growing population in Miri — Dr Sim
MIRI: There is an acute shortage of Chinese community leaders to serve the large and growing population here.
Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said there are currently only 28 community leaders appointed in Miri by the government compared to the more than 130 community leaders in Sibu.
“There is an acute shortage of community leaders for Miri’s big population, which is still growing.
“My ministry will discuss this situation soon with the state leadership,” he said during a meeting with members of Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Lambir branch yesterday.
Dr Sim, who is SUPP president, was accompanied by the party’s secretary general Datuk Sebastian Ting, Datuk Lee Kim Shin (vice president) and Mayor Adam Yii (information chief).
Dr Sim, in a brief statement made available yesterday evening by Yii, said besides discussing issues on community leaders such as the appointment of kapitans, penghulus and pemancas, other key points raised during the meeting was the need for party members to effectively serve the people.
“We need to find ways to deal with any issue that crops up which can affect the party and the general community.
“When we wear our party uniform in public, it must stand for good service to the rakyat, who will assess our party based on our ground work,” he stressed.
At the same time, Dr Sim urged grassroots leaders to update the party’s headquarters on the latest issues happening at branch level, besides continuing to keep in touch with party comrades at divisional and state levels.
